Toxic Chemical Exposure
Millions of workers are exposed to toxic chemicals on the job, even when their employers made some effort to protect them. In many cases, the protections provided are insufficient. Chemical vapors and residues are still breathed or absorbed through the skin. Typically, cancers are caused by years of exposure to carcinogens or very heavy exposure for shorter time periods. In many instances, a person will not develop cancer from chemical exposure until many years (sometimes more than 10 years) after their exposure to these toxins.
Scientific evidence suggests occupational chemical exposure is related to several forms of cancer and leukemia.
- Leukemia
- Blood disorders (such as aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome)
- Liver cancer
- Brain cancer
- Hodgkin's Disease
- Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
The Toxic Chemicals linked to these cancers and illnesses are
- Benzene (either by itself or added into petroleum or other related products)
- Solvents
- Vinyl Chloride monomer (used in PVC manufacture among other uses)
- Other industrial chemicals
Some of the Occupations with the highest risk of dangerous chemical exposure are:
- Industrial Plant workers who use solvents
- Painters
- PVC Plant Workers who use vinyl chloride monomer
- Oil Refinery Workers
- Chemical Lab Workers
- Rubber Industry Workers
- Pesticide Manufacturing
- Printing / Newspaper
- Paper and Pulp Manufacturing
- Gasoline Workers
- Chemical and Petrochemical Plant Workers
- Oil Tanker Workers
